About this place

Best bits

  • Scott and Karolina run Montengrand with the kind of attention to detail that makes everything feel effortless – cold drinks and a cooked welcome meal wait in your cottage on arrival, a pre-arrival shopping service means the basics are stocked before you get there, and fresh bread and croissants arrive each morning without you having to ask.
  • Sheep, chickens and guinea pigs are part of daily life at Montengrand, and children help with feeding, collect eggs and adopt the animals as their own companions for the week.
  • Kids will delight in the tepee (where they can dress up), the wooden fort and the playhouse – not to mention all the space to explore.

Top tips

  • Ask Scott or Karolina which gîte suits your family before you book, as they know every cottage intimately and will match you to the right one – particularly useful if you have a baby and need to know about monitor range to the pool area.
  • Book a massage on arrival, because it sounds indulgent but after a long journey it genuinely resets the pace – and the slower pace of life in the Ariège is very much the point of being here in the first place.
  • Book the babysitter and head to L’Abbaye-Château de Camon for dinner – a romantic five-course dégustation in a medieval abbey-château that is one of the great evenings out in the area and well worth the short drive.

Owner recommendations

  • Book a babysitter for the evening and head off to enjoy a sumptuous five-course dégustation menu at the wonderful, romantic L’Abbaye-Château de Camon.

  • For a real taste of a bustling traditional French market, head to Mirepoix on a Monday morning. Kick things off with breakfast at a cafe on the main square.

  • The massive Lac de Montbel is a great place to head for the day, with boats for hire, swimming and little ponies that can be taken for walks during the summer months.

  • At Parc de la Préhistoire you can learn all about the daily lives of prehistoric people; it’s a fun day out, complete with spear chucking, fire lighting and cave painting.

  • Kids and adults alike will delight at Carcassonne’s fairy tale La Cité; jousting exhibitions are held in its centre in July and August.
