About Larkhill Tipis and Yurts

The ultimate in getting away from modern life and being at one with Mother Nature....a fantastic and unique place for the whole family to enjoy.

Amongst twenty acres of Carmarthenshire woodland you will find some gorgeous dwellings. This is the home of Larkhill - a tipi or yurt holiday in a beautiful location and a wonderful way to get in touch with Mother Nature where the children can enjoy the great outdoors. Spend your evenings sitting next to a glowing log fire, looking at an endless sky of stars, with spectacular views of the Welsh countryside.

Larkhill is an award winning eco-friendly smallholding set in 20 acres in Carmarthenshire, west Wales with fantastic views over Teifi Valley. Set on the edge of  four acres of mature woodland with meandering pathways, numerous wood carvings and a laburnum avenue leading into a seven ringed labyrinth, are five different nomadic structures - a Mongolian ger, a Bentwood yurt, an Iranian Alachigh, an 18' Native American Indian Tipi and a Lavvu, used by the Sami tribe in Scandinavia.  Each structure has its own 'space' and its own campfire area with hand-made stepping stones weaving in and around the campsite to prevent muddy paths!  Fairy lights adorn the pathways at night creating a really magical atmosphere.

The owners have lived as a family at Larkhill for twenty five years and established the campsite in 2003. Being in quite an isolated location with the nearest electricity supply being  half a mile away, they have had to rely on other methods for a power supply. Two small wind generators, solar panels  and a water wheel creates enough energy for the whole of the campsite as well as providing for the family home. They offer a very friendly service and are always on hand if help is needed.

The Yurts and Tipis

The Yurts are located amongst four acres of woodland with numerous wood carvings and benches where you can while away the hours amongst nature.. The Tipi, Lavvu and Alachigh are on the edge of the woodland in their own landscaped terraced areas. This is an ideal place if you need to have a break from the norm as it is a quiet location, well away from busy roads and small enough (a maximum of 22 customers) that it’s safe for children to make friends and become feral! The woodland park with swings and a slide is great for kids or they can make dens and get back to nature.  They can meet the rare breed sheep, chickens and ducks too!  So if you are looking for a relaxed alternative holiday, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then you need look no further.

All of the accommodation is four berth except for the Alachigh which sleeps six. All have wood-burning stoves, comfortable beds, wooden floors, a calor gas stove, LED lighting, wooden furniture and cooking equipment and all are furnished with rugs, sheepskins, colourful throws and large cushions - creating a comfortable warm ambience. Pillows are supplied and a good supply of blankets if it gets a little chilly. There is also a good supply of firewood - a basket a day given freely - and £3 a basket if you need more (and that’s a good size basket - not a handful!) Firelighters are also supplied free of charge.

Everything You Need

The ‘hub’ of the campsite is a log cabin where you will find a lot more cooking equipment and a myriad of information on things to do in the area, including a ‘Local Trip Advisor’ file, information on local pub food/restaurants, BBQ’s, a calor gas stove with an oven, a woodburner, an electric supply for charging up mobiles/computers, a sink for washing up and shelves of books covering topics from trees, bird watching, walks in the area, the night sky, etc. It is also furnished with sheepskins, rugs and cushions to create a snug atmosphere.  Its a great place to mix with other customers, having  a covered campfire area and a pizza oven outside where you can socialise in the evenings.   Fresh eggs are generally available as well as Larkhill honey. All you need to bring are sleeping bags (due to being ‘off grid’ we try to keep the laundry down), your own food, a towel for the shower and a torch, although the fairy lights do provide lighting through most of the campsite.   Also on site there are two recently refurbished hot showers, a tiled compost toilet and a bog standard flush toilet!

Lots To Explore

Larkhill is an ideal base for exploring south, west and mid Wales. Cardigan Bay's coastline is within half an hour's drive away - with its sandy beaches and spectacular scenery.  It’s one of the best places in the UK to see dolphins and seals. Besides the coastline you can canoe along the Teifi River through Cilgerran Gorge - the home of otters and kingfishers. Or visit an Iron Age settlement  where children can make Iron Age bread and have their faces painted like warriors (school holiday periods only). Visit a gold mine or explore one of the many castles or museums. There's horse riding, mountain biking, coastal walks, fishing, Oakwood theme park, Go Karts, Folly Farm,  steam railways  - the list is endless!

Please note unfortunately dogs are not allowed (due to the free roaming chickens!)
