About Larkhill Tipis

Get away from the stress and strains of modern life and the kids have chance to appreciate Mother Nature

Amongst twenty acres of Carmarthenshire woodland you will find some gorgeous dwellings. This is the home of Larkhill - a tipi or yurt holiday in a beautiful location and a wonderful way to get in touch with Mother Nature where the children can enjoy the great outdoors. Spend your evenings sitting next to a glowing log fire, looking at an endless sky of stars, with spectacular views of the Welsh countryside.

The Away with the Kids review

Larkhill is a family home and a smallholding of 20 acres in Carmarthenshire, west Wales. The yurts are located amongst four acres of woodland with meandering pathways, benches where you can while away the hours and a quartz stone circle. The tipis are on the edge of the woodland in their own landscaped terraced area surrounded by a wild flower meadow. This is an ideal place if you need to have a break from the norm as it is a quiet location, well away from busy roads, so if you're looking for a relaxed alternative holiday, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then you need look no further.

There is currently two 4 berth tipis, a 6 berth tipi and two yurts that accommodate up to 4 people. The tipis are furnished with traditional features such as sheepskin rugs, trunks for storing items, a low table, candles and a central wood fire. The floor is covered in rugs and there are wooden bed bases, comfortably covered in foam and futons, together with large cushions, pillows and extra bedding if required. The Yurts are a little more luxurious than the tipis with floorboards and a woodstove. Furnished with slated pine beds, covered foam mattresses and pillows, trunks for storing items, a calor gas burner, low table, soft lighting and lots of sheepskins and cushions. Both yurts have an area outside of them where you can have a log fire.

All cooking equipment is supplied i.e. pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, etc. together with a cold box. Meals are not included in the holiday but you can cook on an open fire (firewood included), a barbeque or on calor gas. Or alternatively there are several good local restaurants! All you need to bring are sleeping bags, your own food, a towel for the shower and a torch, although there are solar lights around the tipis. Available for use by all tipi and yurt dwellers is a log cabin which has a calor gas cooker, woodburning stove, a low energy power supply for mobile phones, battery charging, etc., a sink for washing up and is also furnished with sheepskins, rugs and cushions. Please note there is no facility for hairdryers and similarly high powered appliances. Also on site there are two hot showers, a tiled compost toilet and a bog standard flush toilet!

The owners have lived as a family at Larkhill for fifteen years. Being in quite an isolated location and the nearest electric supply is over half a mile and £20,000 away! They have had to rely on other methods for a power supply. Initially two small wind generators and two solar panels were channelled into batteries to supply a 24 volt electrical system and have proved to be a brilliant source of energy - enabling the use of mod cons from washing machine to computer. The instalment of a Rutland 1803 wind turbine has enormously increased the amount of power available and there are plans to install a water wheel.

Larkhill is an ideal base for exploring south, west and mid Wales. Cardigan Bay's coastline is within half an hour's drive away - with its sandy beaches and spectacular scenery. It is one of the best places in the UK to see dolphins and seals. Besides the coastline you can canoe along the Teifi River through Cilgerran Gorge - the home of otters and kingfishers. Or visit an Iron Age settlement (featured on a BBC Production) where children can make Iron Age bread! and have their faces painted like warriors (school holiday periods only). There's horse riding, fishing, paint balling, Oakwood theme park, Go Karts, Folly Farm, a butterfly farm, chocolate factory, steam railways, castles and museums - the list is endless! Dogs are not allowed.
