Lyon Court

Child friendly cottage, Isle of Wight

About Lyon Court

Lyon Court is a stunning Victorian house which has been converted into four beautifully renovated apartments in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. The perfect place to holiday with children with plenty of child friendly facilities. There is an outdoor pool and a garden sauna available to all, with some apartments equipped with private hot tubs.  It is just a 10 minute walk to the beach and an ideal base to explore the island.

Lyon Court Apartments

Lyon Court has been sympathetically converted into four apartments sleeping from 2 to 8 people (plus an infant). The owners Dan and Bec have two young children themselves and so have made sure Lyon Court is suitable for families (they are even happy to put together a bespoke package of things to do on the island to suit your children).

The Garden Apartment

The newly renovated Garden Apartment (sleeps 8 plus an infant) is just stunning and takes up the full ground floor level at Lyon Court overlooking the beautiful landscaped gardens. The light and airy apartment has a truly Mediterranean feel with its high ceilings and porcelain flooring. The kitchen is well equipped with a range cooker, 5 burner induction hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, wine cooler and even a Grohe instant boiling system for hot drinking water. The dining room has a large table, a beautiful chandelier and has French doors that open out on to the South facing terrace, equipped with a private hot tub overlooking the gardens and pool.

There is a large, smart flatscreen TV (with Netflix and Amazon Prime enabled) in the comfy lounge area - ideal for unwinding in. There is wifi should you need it in the apartment and on the terrace.

The 4 bedrooms (one of which is en-suite) have been tastefully furnished and have lovely little extras - 3 of which have king-sized beds and 1 twin.  In addition, there are 2 family bathrooms - both with baths and Grohe showers and even integrated toddler training seats! The high spec of the Garden Apartment is like that of a high quality hotel.

The Old Stable

The Old Stable is just as it implies - a converted old stable in a tranquil, secluded spot in the gardens of Lyon Court.

The Old Stable has its own private hot tub (available from late May bank holiday weekend to the last week of September.) The kitchen is fully equipped with a full sized oven and hob, a vintage Bosch fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, with ample cupboard space, pots, pans, utensils, crockery and cutlery. The living area is well designed for a couple with a baby (as a cot is available if required), with a comfy sofa, a double bed and a table for 2. There is also a small TV with integral DVD player.

The Garret

The Garret is an apartment situated above the triple garage adjacent to the main building and sleeps 6 (plus an infant) in 2 bedrooms. It has a bright and airy feel with aspects to the front courtyard and side elevation towards the gardens and pool.

The family room incorporates the fully equipped kitchen with full size oven/grill/hob, microwave oven, fridge with freezer compartment, toaster, kettle and all pots, pans and utensils that you might need. The dining area comfortably seats 6 and there is additional comfortable seating to watch the 32" flatscreen TV with integral DVD player. Bedroom 1 has a double bed, bunk beds for the kids and space to accommodate a cot. Bedroom 2 has a double bed and a roof window that catches the morning sun. Both bedrooms benefit from en-suite bathrooms with full size bath and shower over, basin and WC.

Flat 1

Flat 1 is a spacious first floor apartment sleeping a family of 6, with dual aspects to the front and rear of Lyon Court. It has a family room which incorporates a fully equipped kitchen with full size oven/grill/hob, microwave oven, fridge with freezer compartment, toaster, kettle and all pots, pans and utensils that you might need. The dining area comfortably seats 6 and there is additional comfortable seating to watch the 32" flatscreen TV with integral DVD player.

The main bathroom is equipped with a large, walk-in shower enclosure, basin and WC. The WC also has an integral toddler training seat.

Bedroom 1 has a king sized bed, a large wardrobe, a comfy chair and footstool, with views of the gardens and Shanklin Down. Bedroom 2 has a double bed, bunk beds for the kids, a large wardrobe and a newly refurbished ensuite bathroom with full sized bath and shower, basin and WC. Again, the WC has an integral toddler training seat. This bedroom also has views of the gardens and Shanklin Down. Both bedrooms are big enough to accomodate a cot (although the maximum occupancy of Flat 1 must not exceed 6 including infants).

Child-friendly and Family Facilities

Lyon Court has an outdoor pool heated to a balmy 28 degrees (open from the late May Bank Holiday weekend through to the end of September), which is a favourite with the children. They can make friends with other families and let their imaginations run wild in the play-house or on the play equipment, whilst grown-ups relax in the Garden Sauna.

Gather around the fire-pit or cook on the gas BBQ if you want some al-fresco dining as the island sun goes down.

Understanding that families cannot travel light, there is a laundry room available and you can hire towels if you choose not to take them yourself. There are also free cots and high chairs available on request.

Out & About

The Isle of Wight is the perfect destination for family holidays - the excitment mounts from the short ferry crossing over the water. The island has so many fun packed things to see and do and may even bring back some childhood memories for the parents too!

Lyon Court is close to beautiful beaches, but the one recommended by the owners is Small Hope Beach - part of Shanklin Beach (which has again won a 'Sunshine' Award in 2018 for high standards of cleanliness and facilities), where you can spend the day building sandcastles, swimming in the water, rent a beach hut and eat an ice-cream.

Let your imagination run wild at Blackgang Chine; collect coloured sand at Alum Bay; go to The Needles; visit the Zoo or Robin Hill Country Park. Enjoy the beautiful model village at Godshill, visit castles and country houses or take a ride on the steam railway - the places to go and things to do are endless.

For the more active family, hire a bike (the owners can get you 25% off from their friends at RouteFifty7 bike hire), go tree climbing, horse riding, karting, sailing or surfing.

And if all that isnt enough, depending on when you visit, the island has festivals including the Isle of Wight Festival in June, the Fairweather festival in August, Eklectica in September and the famous Cowes week. There are local festivals and carnivals throughout the summer - look in 'Local Events' for details.

The only problem is fitting it all in!

Please note: The owners can negotiate discounted ferry crossings when booking with them.

The Best Bits...

1. Dan and Bec are fantastic, welcoming hosts.

2. The swimming pool – in hot weather you’ll struggle to drag yourselves away from the grounds.

3. The garden with its climbing frame and two-storey Wendy house.

4. A great location on the outskirts of Shanklin, close to lovely beaches and lots of facilities.

5. The smart, modern apartments.

6. Dan and Bec put together a bespoke list of things to do based on the age and interests of guests’ kids.

7. Well-equipped kitchens.

8. Free bus passes on offer to get guests out exploring the island using public transport (handy for avoiding beach car park fees).

9. Friday evening barbecues are held during the summer, which end with toasting marshmallows over a campfire.

Top Tips...

1. No need to bring all your food supplies over to the island with you – Shanklin has a number of supermarkets to choose from.

2. Towels are included with longer stays, but for shorter stays you can either pay to hire some or bring your own.

3. Ask for a cot and/or highchair if you need them, rather than taking up space in your car with them.

4. Basic items such as tea, coffee, sugar and milk are provided in the kitchens, but you’ll want to stock up for longer stays.

5. Don’t forget to pack your swimming costumes, beach towels, and buckets and spades.

6. Bring your Netflix log in details as you can connect to your account through their TVs.

7. Book one of the apartments with a hot tub for a little extra luxury.

8. Dan and Bec are more than happy to help with any aspect of your trip so are well worth contacting in advance for ideas.

9. The Garden Apartment is a great option for two families holidaying together.

What The Kids Say...

“It was the best thing! I loved going on the slide and splashing into the pool. It was really nice and I loved everything. It was Lydia’s best thing ever!” Lydia, 5.
