Middle Stone Farm Glamping

Child friendly glamping, Somerset

About Middle Stone Farm Glamping

Middle Stone Farm is a place to kick back and relax, switch off your mobile phones and spend some quality 'quiet' time together as a family…

Middle Stone Farm, in Somerset, is home to a veritable menagerie of animals; with a flock of free range chickens, geese, alpaca, sheep, goats, usually some pigs, and a family dog - there is always something going on the farm! Choose from one of six luxurious Safari Tents or The Deckhouse. Five of the six tents sleep a family of up to six, one sleeps up to eight. Each has its own en-suite shower room and a separate flushing loo, wood burning hots tubs and a shared children's play area. A stay in one of these fabulous tents offers all the charms of camping but with those cosy treats that make it a luxury experience. The Deckhouse is a quaint and quirkily decorated two bedroom holiday home with real charm and solid walls! All have high chairs, travel cots, children's books and toys to borrow. The farm is set in 32 acres of farmland and surrounded by rolling countryside, near Taunton on the edge of the Exmoor National Park. So pack your wellies and get ready to embrace the simple things in life, with beautiful West Somerset, Exmoor and the North Devon coast just beckoning to be explored.

Glamping - The Safari Tents

Middle Stone Farm is an eco-friendly working farm and a great place for families to unwind and connect with nature. Glamping, camping for softies, call it what you will - these safari-style tents are a brilliant concept whether yours is a family of hardened or first-time campers. Yes, they have a canvas roof and walls, but this is camping with a difference. Because they're more like basic cottages, you don't have to relinquish the comforts of home. Raised off the ground and with wooded floors, the tents all have a big living area with a kitchen, running water which is heated by the wood burning stove AND proper beds with duvets and pillows, all made up for your arrival. The tents have a low voltage sockets in the tents so you can charge your phone and lighting is via candle power supplimented with LED lanterns. There is also a little retro fridge/freezer in which to store all your perishables or simply chill the beer. The best bit about these tents is that they elimate those pesky night time trips across to the toilet block, as joy of joys, each tent has it's own en-suite shower with flushing toilet. Now that's what I call luxury.

The glamping is in three separate locations on the farm.
There are three safari lodges each sleeping up to 6 people named after birds: Buzzard, Hawk and Kestrel.  They are closest to the shop and parking, so great for parents of toddlers. Then in a different location (2-3 minutes walk away) there are three more safari lodges - Badger, Fox and Stag.  Badger and Fox are dog friendly (one well behaved pooch is allowed in each) and they each sleep up to 6.
The third lodge in the new field is Stag and is a huge safari lodge with a double deck and it will sleep up 8-9 people.  Perfect for families who want to share a space, or families where the grandparents want to come too.  It is really spacious, has 4 bedrooms including the quirky cabin bed, a large shower room and second tiolet in a cloakroom.

Glamping Tents with Hot Tubs

The bedrooms are sectioned off, one a double bed another with twin beds, and to the rear of the living area, opposite the kitchen there is a cupboard which opens up to reveal a small double bed. To avoid the squabbles of who sleeps where it's best to draw lots as the children will be desperate to sleep in the quirky cupboard bed and in daytime it becomes a handy den. Cots, highchairs and toys are provided and a babysitting service is available should the grown-ups wish to go out in the evening. Each tent has swing ball for family tournaments, a hammock and a hot tub for chill out time. The Swedish hot tub is heated by a wood burner and does require a good 3-4 hours to get them to a suitable temperature. For all its modern luxuries you will find there are enough traditions for those seeking the camping experience. Campfires outside your tent on the tripod barbecue allow you to share the evening with the stars, toasting marshmallows over the open fire and inhaling the country air.

The Deckhouse

The Deckhouse available all year round, is a quaint two bedroom holiday home with whitewashed panelled walls and a full width outdoor porch. With views overlooking the farmland, you'll be forgiven if you think it's not too dissimilar from the 'Little House on the Prairie'. It has a relaxed ambiance, with stripped wooden floors, soft and cosy furnishings with a pop of colour to inject warmth and personality.  There is a mixture of old and new, with lots of bits and bobs adding to the homely charm. High, beamed ceilings make the open plan living area feel spacious and airy while a large wood burning stove keeps the whole place toasty and warm whatever the season. In one corner of the living area is a two-seater sofa, flatscreen TV, while the other half of the room comprises a central dining table and fitted kitchen. The Deckhouse is all one level and has a bedroom at either end, plus a shower room/wc. One bedroom has a king-size bed and space for a travel cot, which can be provided. The second has bespoke bunk beds which are have been designed specifically for children.

The Deckhouse is located on the far side of the farm, away from the field with the glamping tents, so you are assured of your own privacy. All the better to enjoy the fabulous and decadent Swedish hot tub; heated by a wood burner it does require a good 3-4 hours to get the water to a suitable temperature.

Glamping at it's finest.

The Farm Shop

The Farm shop is open from Easter to October where you can buy everything to make a delious cooked breakfast - farm sausages and bacon from the farms own free range pigs and blue eggs from the hens. West Country milk and butter, homemade jams, ice creams, Somerset apple juice, delicious sourdough bread from the White Post Bakery, Devon pies and pasties and local goat's cheese. They also sell freshly baked warm croissants and pain au chocolate to order along with the weekend papers in the morning.  There is a selection of excellent value quality wines, local beers and cider.

The locality and things to do

Middle Stone Farm is at the end of a private lane, approximately one mile from the little village of Brompton Ralph in West Somerset. The farm is set in 32 acres of farmland and surrounded by rolling countryside, just a few miles from Exmoor National Park where you choose to book with Exmoor Wildlife Safaris for a tour. There are lots of National Trust places nearby including Dunster Castle, Knightshayes, Killerton and Montecute House. A great way to see the countryside is to take a trip along the coast on a traditional steam train with West Somerset Heritage Railway. The owners recommed Lee Bay which is their favourite beach and usually pretty empty with a nice cafe too. As you are located close to Devon's border if you fancy a run out further afield then Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands are family favourites. Tarr Steps is a memorable sunny day out, where you can while away the hours paddling in the river with fishing nets and enjoying an ice cream or a picnic.
