The Away with the Kids review
Set in 30 acres of gorgeous countryside Peebles Hydro Hotel is a genteel pace and has the sentiment of times gone by - it is very civilised and there is clearly a contingent that have been in the know for a long time. However, it is most certainly moving on making way for those of us with young families looking to participate in the respite and calm. Peebles is not for you if you are looking for minimalist contemporary, high tech accommodation; it is perfect if you wish to relax in very comfortable and relaxed surroundings in a gorgeous setting.
Gazing out at the hills opposite the sun room is somewhat of a mental fix-it for most things - from here the Tweed Valley looks like a master has designed them; stunning either on the sunniest of days (yesterday) or with clouds and the prospect of drizzle (today).
Family rooms comprise a double with an adjoining bunk-room so the kids get their own space and you maintain a little privacy. Many overlook the gorgeous Tweed Valley - not too bad a view to wake up to. The spacious rooms come equipped with satellite tv, toiletries, radio, telephone and tea and coffee making facilities. Wi-fi is available in most areas of the hotel. Suites are also available - ours would easily have fit all of us in the bedroom alone - the lounge housed an extra single bed and a sofa bed for the girls, who were delighted to be able to either watch the rabbits out of the window or watch X Factor in bed! The bathroom housed a phone - we hadn't come across that before - trying to prevent Eve calling room service from her very decadent deep bath was amusing!
Younger children have their own dining room where the staff from the Kids Club serve meals beuffet style and keep an eye on things. The girls had a huge choice of freshly prepared nosh, including fish pie, shepherds pie, gammon, chips etc with a lovely fridge full of desserts to choose from. A supper menu is provided for teenagers in the more refined Lazel's Bistro, which is also a good place for a coffee during the day and offers a varied and healthy menu. Children are incidentally welcome to eat in the main dining room but there is a small charge for this.
The sophisticated Dining Room is where you will take a buffet style breakfast - it's very relaxed and the staff very friendly. Cereals, fresh fruit, cooked breakfasts and pastries are all available. For dinner there is a smart dress code for dinner after 6:30 - neither jeans nor trainers are permitted. It's quite a lavish affair with a pianist playing during the weekends - the atmosphere is formal but really quite genial and we enjoyed our meals both nights - the vegetarian and meat offerings were both delicious.
For the Kids
If you want some time for yourself - or maybe the kids want to get away - you may book a session or two at the Hydro Kids Club, where there are various age appropriate activities through the day. Children are booked in and out and may choose from various play areas. For 3-7 year olds there is a safe and well equipped playroom and for children aged 8-12 there are activities such as rounders, table tennis, clay modeling and film shows. Eve and Lottie went swimming, all three enjoyed a movie night, they loved the nature trail and games out on the lawn and made heaps of friends that they are still in touch with. They are looking forward to going back - preferably with everyone just the same!!!
Baby listening can be arranged and baby sitters can be organized, charged at an hourly rate.
