“After stepping across the threshold and clocking the varied selection of wellies to borrow in the hallway we felt at ease that the formalities of a boutique hotel were going to be a little more relaxed at Another Place, The Lake. The kids were thrilled by paddleboarding for two hours against the glorious backdrop of the fells.”

Rooms

All of the rooms are decorated in soothing tones that complement the beautiful surrounding countryside; many have glorious views over Ullswater. Those in the main Georgian house boast original features, while those in the new wing have a more contemporary feel.

Family suites sleep up to six and benefit from separate bunkrooms for children and sitting areas so you all have a bit more room to unwind at the end of the day. For a bit more freedom, opt for one of the cottages; these have two bedrooms and an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area.

Eat

Good food is at the heart of Another Place and available in both The Living Space and Rampsbeck Restaurant. The Living Space is more casual – expect dishes like burgers and mussels – while the Rampsbeck serves a three-course dinner that is inspired by local produce.

Kids’ high tea is served every day at 5pm. You can also order food for picnics, or bring along a barbecue with you for an alfresco meal by the lake on a warm evening.

Activities

Given its location on Ullswater, it’s no surprise that a huge range of water sports are offered by the hotel, from kayaking and canoeing to sailing and wild swimming. Stand-up paddleboarding lessons are also available, and suitable for kids as young as five years old.

Water activities continue inside the hotel as well, with the indoor pool and outdoor hot tub. Alternatively, escape for an hour to the spa to really unwind.

Accessibility

There are two accessible bedrooms, which are on the ground floor and have accessible bathrooms. The ground floor public spaces are all accessible, as is the terrace next to the swim club and parts of the extensive grounds.

Despite it’s peaceful location on Ullswater, the hotel is handily located just six miles from the M6.

By Rail

The nearest train station is at Penrith, which is a 15 to 20-minute drive from the hotel; car hire is available in the town

Cruise the nine miles of Ullswater on The Ullswater Steamers, with stops at Glenridding, Pooley Bridge, Aria Force pier and Howtown.
Kids will love the Treetop Trek, where you can swing, climb and balance your way through the woodland canopy before racing down the triple zip wire.
Lowther Castle is much more than it sounds – in addition to its dramatic ruins and beautiful; gardens you’ll also discover a fantastic adventure playground.
Honister, England’s last working slate mine, provides a backdrop for a number of unique adventures on an iconic Lake District mountain, from ‘Climb the Mine’ to the vertigo-inducing Infinity Bridge.
Soak up more stunning views and walks in Whinlatter Forest; mountain bikers in particular will relish the trails and little ones will love going on the hunt for Zog.
