Howgills Barn is a relaxed, child-friendly base in Sedbergh, perfect for families and groups who want space, comfort and great value — without any fuss. Set in classic walking and cycling country on the edge of The Lakes and Dales, it’s ideal for days spent outdoors and easy, sociable evenings back together.
Inside, the barn is made for group living. There’s a large open-plan lounge and dining space where everyone can gather, plus an upstairs snug with Sky TV and games for quieter downtime. A separate games room with table tennis, pool and darts keeps the fun going long after muddy boots are kicked off. Underfloor heating runs throughout the downstairs, so even winter stays feel warm and welcoming, while wooden beams and big picture windows add plenty of character and light.
Outside, there’s room to properly spread out. The undercover hot tub is a firm favourite after active days, especially on clear nights when the stars come out. With five acres of land, a terrace, outdoor games and a large playing field, kids have loads of space to run, kick a ball, play rounders or just burn off energy while adults relax nearby.
Sleeping arrangements are practical and sociable, leaning into the fun of group holidays. The barn has eight en-suite bunk bedrooms sleeping between 8 and 35 guests — great for big family gatherings, cousins’ holidays or friends travelling together. Most rooms sleep up to four, with a mix of bunks and doubles, and there’s a first-floor room with disabled access. It has a cheerful, sleepover-style feel that kids love and adults quickly lean into.
Dogs are welcome in the main areas, but please not in bedrooms. Don’t forget to bring a dog bed and dog towels.
All in all, Howgills Barn is about easy living: space to play, places to flop, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes group family holidays feel straightforward, affordable and genuinely enjoyable.
