Looking for an adventure in sunny France? Domaine de Pont Vieux is a true paradise in Aubeterre sur Dronne, one of the 'beaux villages' of France and ideal for families (in fact up to 18 people). Completely secluded, the property comes complete with its own private sandy river beach and lies on the edge of the village where you can walk to shops and restaurants.

Top tips

Bring swimwear – the river is perfect for a dip in summer.
Wellies are necessary out of summer season if you want to explore the grounds.
It gets very dark at night so bring a torch and be prepared to be astounded by all the stars you can spot.

The Domaine is a large, contemporary holiday home on 2 floors, with four bedrooms, plus additional sofa beds for larger groups (sleeping up to 12 with sofa beds). The next-door annexe has a private entrance and sleeps two and is ideal for teenagers or grand parents wanting their own space. There’s also a self-contained wood cabin (with kitchen) that sleeps four in two bedrooms.

The main house has a large open-plan living/dining area (including an open fire) and a fully equipped kitchen; doors open on to the extensive grounds which lead down to the river and island.

No need to bring linen or towels, it’s all provided.

The owners have thought about everything… the main house has 1 family bathroom with toilet, sink and power shower. There is also a shower room on the ground floor with 5 shower cubicles, 5 toilets and 5 sinks, so there’s certainly no queuing for the bathroom!

Both the annexe and wood cabin also have their own bathrooms.

Eat

The Domaine is a self-catering property and the kitchen has everything you could need. There’s also a barbecue for al fresco dining.

The lovely village of Aubeterre is within walking distance and you’ll find a good variety of restaurants open here throughout the year. The Domaine’s owner, Carmen, owns La Taverne in Aubeterre – you can book a table direct with her.

Activities

Domaine de Pont Vieux benefits from its own river beach; guests can get out on the water in the provided canoe, go swimming, or fish from the platforms. There’s also a ping pong table and table football available, plus a football field on the island.

There are loads of activities that can be enjoyed nearby including horse riding and golf, and kayaking can be arranged from the beach at Aubeterre.

Where is it and how do you get there?

By Road

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne sits in a rural area but is easily reached by road and is a relatively short drive from the D674.

By Air

Bergerac Airport is about 70 minutes’ drive away; Bordeaux’s larger airport can be reached in around 85 minutes. Car hire is available at both.

By Rail

The nearest train station is at Chalais, just 15 minutes’ drive from Aubeterre-sur-Dronne.

Owner recommendations

Just a short walk from the house is Aubeterre’s striking monolithic rock church – Europe’s largest subterranean church – which is well worth a visit and blissfully cool on hot days.
Beautiful Brantôme, which is often referred to as ‘the Venice of the Dordogne’ is only 30 minutes away and well worth a day trip.
Head to nearby St Aulaye, which has its own river beach (with lifeguards), heated pool and tennis courts, plus an adventure playground with zipline and giant trampolines.
For a day of retail therapy and culture, Bordeaux is in easy reach; make time to soak up the city from a terrace over a glass of the region’s celebrated red wine.
Make time to visit some of the morning markets to stock up on fresh local produce.
