The Forge is a beautifully designed, child-friendly cottage in Cornwall, with river views, a secure garden and the Camel Trail a one-minute walk away. It’s a luxurious base for family holidays in this part of Cornwall — with a travel cot, stairgate, highchair and booster seat already there, plus toys, toddler cups and beach bits. Two bedrooms and the family bathroom are downstairs too, which makes little-kid routines easier. Easy days out, then back home to flop, reset and be together.

Best bits

A family-owned place - the owners have children of their own, and it shows — it’s been set up for real family stays, not just weekends without kids.
Huge windows + river outlook - the view does a lot of the calming for you — especially first thing with coffee, or when you’re winding down later.
Camel Trail on the doorstep - you’re basically out the door and on it, which makes bikes/scooters/prams feel like an actual plan (not a faff). Beautiful open-plan living with room to flop Light-filled, luxuriously furnished and generous on space — everyone can be together without being on top of each other.

Top tips

No stairgate provided. If you’re travelling with toddlers, pack one (or plan for close supervision around the stairs). Do one decent food shop early on. Then you can mix home meals with cafés and pub stops without thinking about it every day. If you want surf lessons, book ahead in school holidays. It’s much nicer when it’s already sorted. Pack layers for evenings. It can cool down quickly once the sun drops.
Bring helmets if you’re planning to cycle. Even if you hire bikes, kids’ helmets you know fit well are worth having.
Do one decent food shop early on. Then you can mix home meals with cafés and pub stops without thinking about it every day.

It’s calm, comfortable and well considered, with easy access to the Camel Trail and nearby beaches shaping relaxed, outdoorsy days. A luxurious but unfussy base that lets you enjoy Cornwall — and each other — without overthinking it.

Family-ready set-up

Set up by owners who holiday here with their grandchildren, The Forge comes with loads of the family stuff already in place — and it genuinely helps. Bright, open-plan living spaces, beautifully curated with luxury furnishings and loads of room for your family to flop — this is a family holiday home ready and waiting for you to rock up and do your thing.

The huge windows make the most of the light, with lovely views out to the garden and the river beyond. The sofas are super comfortable, perfect for a pre-bedtime read or a family movie night, and the wood-burner comes into its own once the evenings draw in.

Being open-plan means everyone can enjoy the space together. Whether you’re in the kitchen meal-prepping, cooking or clearing up (!), you’re still part of the bedlam — or the calm. The Forge is sociable, easy and set up for relaxed holiday living: bags dropped, coats kicked off and everyone slipping into holiday mode.

There’s also an additional snug, which is handy when someone needs a quiet moment, a nap, or a bit of screen time while everyone else carries on.

And because the owners holiday here with their grandchildren, loads of the practical stuff is already covered: toys for indoors, a blender, toddler cups/cutlery/plates/bowls, plus beach bits and even a paddling pool.

Bedrooms & bathrooms

Two of the bedrooms are downstairs, which makes a big difference with little ones (and is great for grandparents too). The main family bathroom is also on the ground floor, with a bath and shower attachment — ideal after beach days and muddy walks.

Upstairs, there are two further bedrooms, offering quieter spaces for grown-ups or older children. One double has a blackout blind, which can be a real help for naps or lighter summer evenings.

Family kit includes a travel cot, stairgate, highchair and booster seat — the kind of things that make packing feel far less epic.

Outside space

Outside, the garden is generous and peaceful, with space for little ones to potter and views across the river for grown-ups to savour. It works just as well for a slow morning coffee as it does for lunch outside, a bit of a run-around before bedtime, or a glass of wine once the house is quiet.

Eat

Eating at The Forge is easy, which is exactly what you want on a family holiday. The kitchen is well set up for breakfast-before-adventures, quick lunches in between, and simple dinners when everyone’s back, sandy and tired. Because it’s open-plan, whoever’s on cooking duty still feels part of things (even if they’re also on clearing-up duty…).

If the weather’s kind, lunch outside is a good habit to get into — especially if the kids are tearing around the garden and you just want to sit still for five minutes.

For eating out, you’re well placed for low-faff options. Padstow and Wadebridge are both close enough for an easy meal out, and you’ve got plenty of casual choices along the coast too. Polzeath is a good shout for post-beach food, and Rock is great if you fancy a slightly slower lunch with a view.

You’ll also find farm shops and supermarkets within easy reach, so you can do one proper stock-up and then coast through the rest of the week — the holy grail with kids.

Activities

One of the real joys of staying at The Forge is the easy access to the great outdoors. Step outside and the Camel Trail is right there — ideal for prams, balance bikes, trikes or whatever wheels you’ve brought with you (there’s a hire shop nearby if needed). Cycling along the trail is a brilliant family adventure — just don’t expect much help from a child on a tag-along when it’s time to pedal home.

Beach days are equally straightforward, with plenty of choice depending on the mood. Polzeath is fantastic for surfing, with schools on hand if you want to learn or brush up your skills. Daymer Bay is ideal for younger children thanks to its calmer waters, while Rock is always a winner for an easygoing beach day — picnics, paddling, body-boarding and long sessions building sandcastles. Bucket and spade firmly recommended.

For slower days, Cardinham Woods and Bodmin Beacon are great for an easy wander and some fresh air. Padstow and Wadebridge are near enough to pile into the car for a relaxed potter or lunch out, and handy for topping up supplies too.
