Bartley Lodge is a proper Georgian country house – high ceilings, long corridors with lots of period character. The three lounges offer socialising breathing space, the bar is lived-in rather than designed, and the dining room and orangery open onto the gardens. Public areas are all on the ground floor, which makes getting outside with buggies and small children considerably easier.
There’s a relaxed sense of space throughout that works particularly well for little ones and those of you looking for a multi-generational stays, there's space for everyone to drift between moments together and time apart – whether that’s a slower morning, a quiet sit in the lounge, or downtime between outings.
The hotel has 39 bedrooms spread across three floors. Family rooms are genuinely family-sized: a king or super king bed, plus bunk beds or a trundle bed for up to three children, with space for a travel cot if you're bringing a baby. Every room has an en-suite bathroom – some with a shower only, others with a bath and overhead shower – along with tea and coffee facilities, a hairdryer and toiletries as standard. Some rooms have four-poster beds, others have garden views. It's all straightforward and unfussy, which is sometimes just what you need when you're travelling with children.
If you've got very small children or a lot of luggage, it's worth asking for a ground floor room when you book – it makes the nap times and early mornings infinitely more manageable.
