Situated on the sunny Charent-Dordogne border, these child-friendly cottages have oodles of facilities and activities to keep the children entertained and parents relaxed. Fill your days in the outdoor swimming pools shared with just the six cottages and take woodland walks from your door - Chateau de Gurat is a magical place, for all ages!

Best bits

Lounging by the heated and gated pool, while soaking up the beautiful countryside views.
Taking a break from the midday sun in the Bergerie (play barn) and challenging the kids to table-tennis or table football, or chill out with a book, DVD, jigsaw or game. The fancy dress chest is also a huge favourite.
Getting the kids to burn off some of that excess energy on the trampoline, swings, slide, rope ladders, and easy walks down to the stream and rolling fields.

Top tips

Avoid cooking on the first night (or any other) and order pre-prepared home cooked meals to pop into the oven.
Pack light - there's a huge array of baby and toddler equipment in every cottage, plus more available on request.
Take towels with you or pre-order a towel pack to save on luggage space if you’re flying.

The luxury two, three and four bed gites are set in beautiful gardens with lovely panoramic views. All the gites have been carefully renovated to provide comfortable, family friendly, holiday accommodation whilst maintaining a sense of rural France with lovely limestone walls and exposed beams.

Fully equipped with a modern kitchen, each cottage also has its own washing machine and microwave. Outdoors you will have private space on your terrace, complete with teak furniture and barbecue to enjoy some alfresco dining.

Eat

All of the cottages are well-equipped for self-catering.

For a night off, get together with some of the other guests on a Pizza night and share some Pizza from the wood fired oven. Or choose from the selection of delicious pre-prepared home-cooked meals that can simply be popped into the oven if you don't fancy cooking (very popular on the day of arrival).

There are also numerous local restaurants in nearby villages that are well worth a visit.

Activities

The kids will never be bored at Chateau de Gurat. With heated and gated swimming pools, indoor and outdoor play areas, toys, games and small animals on-site, and all contained within a secure gated environment, there is always something to do.

For adults there are wine tasting and pizza evenings. We can also provide approved English-speaking babysitters.

There is also a 1000yr old monolithic church to explore almost underneath the Chateau... a nice 40min round trip walk with kids.

Further afield you will find stunning ancient towns and villages with wonderful markets, castles to explore, beautiful lake and river beaches, numerous large caves, canoeing, cycle trails, horse riding, excellent golf courses and wonderfully tranquil walks.

Where is it and how do you get there?

By Road

Angeloume is approximately 30 minutes north of the cottages and is well connected to Paris and Bordeaux by the N10 motorway.

By Air

Nearest airports are either Bergerac or Limoges. Airports within 1 half and a half hours drive - Bordeaux, Poitiers, Bergerac and Limoges.

By Rail

The TVG (fast train) goes from St Pancras to Angouleme (20 mins north of the cottages) with a change at either Paris or Lille. Car hire is available across the road from the station.

Owner recommendations

Another firm favourite is the Poltrot river beach. Here you will also find a great monkey ropes playground and a lovely restaurant set beside the river and an old water mill.
Visit Aubeterre, which a hidden gem of a village. You will find a river beach, artist studios, puppet theatre and a lively square. This is also the site of one of Europe’s largest monolithic churches - truly stunning.
Enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Brantome, which is circled by the river Dronne. Shopping, cafes and good for canoeing too. There is a great market on Friday morning. The Villars caves are also nearby if the heat is on in the afternoon.
Head to St Aulaye river beach, and play on the water slides. The bar/restaurant has excellent pizza along with other more local dishes and offers a moule/frite night every Sunday (booking recommended).
Visit the stunning Chateau at Rochefoucald which has been in the same family for 1000yrs. You can get into the spirit of Chateau life by dressing up in their selection of period costumes. Nearby you will also find good restaurants and the beautiful caves systems of Placard and Chazelles.
Go to Villbois-Lavalette (10 mins away) and take a walk a walk around the ramparts of its ancient castle or stroll through the village and get some ice cream.
Visit one of the local markets during your stay with us. It's just so quintessentially French to visit a bustling local market, with the wonderful array of fresh local produce. We also recommend visiting the local farm (5 mins away) to stock up on fruit and veg prior to going to the supermarket.
Swim in beautiful Lake Jemaye and soak up the sun on its large sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. You will also find good food in its two beach restaurants.
Canoeing is popular around about here, and you’ll get to see some of the otherwise hidden spectacular views of the region. Brantome and Aubeterre are great starting points for this.
