The five barns were built by Hartland monks over 150 years ago and converted from original farm buildings. Three cluster around a cobbled courtyard reached by stone steps, one sits at ground level nearby, and one has its own cottage garden across the quiet lane. They've been converted with real care and it shows in the quality furnishings and layouts that work beautifully for families, with spaces that feel generous and comfortable.
Kids and adults have been considered - you'll find lovely quality toys and books waiting for your children, while the welcome scones are the perfect reason to pop on the kettle and enjoy a cuppa between the unpacking.
All barns have wood-burning stoves, blackout blinds, good wi-fi, fresh linen and towels included. Cots, highchairs, baby baths and stair gates are available in all properties.
Week St Mary sleeps two plus a cot across one level. The open-plan space has exposed beams overhead and a wood burner that becomes the heart of the room on cooler evenings. Simple, cosy, everything you need in one easy flow.
Roseland sleeps four with two bedrooms. The layout works beautifully for families with young children - comfortable, unfussy and well thought through the bedrooms are close enough that you'll hear them if they wake, far enough apart that bedtimes don't disturb each other.
Greenway is the largest of the five and sleeps four in an upside-down arrangement that gives you space and light. Downstairs there's a four-poster double and a generous twin room, both leading off a hallway. Upstairs the open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas have high ceilings and windows that pull the valley views right in. There's a private enclosed patio off the kitchen for morning coffee or evening wine, and a wood burner for when you're settled in for the night.
Clovelly sleeps two plus a cot and sits at ground level, which makes life easier if you're managing buggies or tired toddlers. It's compact and comfortable with everything on one floor – bedroom, bathroom, open-plan living and kitchen. No stairs to negotiate, no levels to worry about.
Smudgers sits in its own cottage garden across the quiet lane, which gives it more privacy than the courtyard barns. It sleeps two plus a cot and looks out over wildflower meadows. Inside there's a super king bed, a country-style kitchen with wooden units, and a shower room that guests consistently mention in reviews – apparently it's rather good. This is the barn that welcomes dogs, and the cottage garden gives them space to potter about.
Every barn has a fully equipped kitchen, blackout blinds, wood burner or log burner, and all the kit – cots, highchairs, baby baths, stair gates – that makes self-catering with small children manageable rather than heroic.
