About Crieff Hydro - Self Catering

All of the fabulous joys that Crieff has to offer with the freedom of self-catering - a perfect combination I think!

Sprawling across a 900 acre estate the 4 star Crieff Hydro is set within the picturesque Strathearn Valley, an hours derive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The fabulous variety of both outdoor and indoor pursuits available will immediately instil the knowledge that, come what may, the kids will have something to keep them occupied and happy - same applies to you too!

Crieff Hydro has a fabulous choice of self-catering accommodation to choose from including 5 star luxury cottages and lodges chalets to cover a range of budgets.  You may enjoy the benefit of self-catering accommodation with the kids set either within the estate grounds or in Culcrieff village which is built on the original farm stead.  All share the marvellous choice of over 60 indoor and outdoor activities offered at the Hydro.

Situated above the Hotel in woodland, the beautifully furnished and very spacious 5-star luxury lodges (eek I sound like an estate agent!) offer some of the highest standard self catering accommodation in Scotland.  They are within easy but quite steep walking distance of the leisure facilities, bars and restaurants. Cottages are 4 star and are set in the estate grounds, some a little further from the hotel, all of them unique. The chalets (3 star) are set above the Hotel in woodland.  They are perfect for a comfortable family break when access to the resort's sports and entertainment is your priority.

High chairs, cots, stair gates and plastic plates etc are availble.

Child Care

Children staying at the Hydro, aged between 2-12 years, are entitled to two inclusive childcare sessions each day of their stay choosing between morning, afternoon or evening time slots. This gives you the ideal opportunity to enjoy the grown up facilities or simple quiet time. The BIG Country crèche offers supervised child-care for children under the age of 2 years and is available at an additional supplement.

I do have a thing about creches as I like our holiday time to be spent together but all three girls LOVED this place and I suspect much preferred it to being with 'the parents'.  It also provided a huge social platform given that they met all their friends later in the ballroom for either Highland flings or disco divaing.

Places to Eat

There are four eateries on site. The formal, grown up dining option is covered by the Meikle Restaurant wich we did one night without the girls (busy in the kids club).  Food is traditional and good.  The truly excellent Brasserie provides for informal dining with or without the kids.  We all ate together and had a very relaxed meal with fantastic serving staff and a really easygoing atmosphere.  The food incidentally was beautifully prepared and delicious.  The Winter Garden coffee shop is perfect for a coffee and cake moment (and light meals) whilst the Hub has light lunches and snacks and houses the bar with Sky Sports!  Seemingly the perfect area for Dad's to wiat waiting for the kids to complete their sports class in the hall!

Food For Kids

Well as mentioend The Brasserie provided excellent fare for us all, however you do have the very convenient and sound option of high tea served between 5 and 6 in the kids own restaurant area.  Food is fresh and plentiful and laid out as a carvery where you might choose from a variety of healthy options, hot or cold, or of you are having a bad day nigh on anything that you might think of to get a child to eat!  Soup, salad, cheese, cooked meats, cooked veg, raw veg, scrumptious cakes, jellies, fishfingers, lasagne or bread and butter. Anything!

Things to Do

So the 60 activities - not sure they include strolling around the gardens and grounds but it was lovely. Choose from swimming in one of the two pools, one an adults only spa, use the spacious gym, play outdoor chess, go bowling or tee off at the hotel's 18 hole golf course. Then there's the onsite outdoor activity centre offering quad biking, off road driving, archery and even a 50 foot climbing wall and high and low ropes courses. You can also enjoy horse riding out and about on the estate, play a game of tennis, squash or badminton or join in with the extensive daily entertainments program. The outdoor wooden play area gives the kids some space to climb and screech before the next episode!

If pampering is more your style the Victorian Spa in conjunction with the Health Hair and Beauty teams can tailor a package to soothe, relax or invigorate.

There is never a dull moment at Crieff - whatever your age, whatever you fancy you can get on and do!  It is a vibrant place and can get busy but everything happens so seamlessly you won't realise - and there is laods of space to disappear off to if it all just gets too much!
