Two cottages have downstairs facilities, suitable for those with limited mobility. Hosts can also provide ramps for wheelchair access to the cottage entrances. If you have any special requirements, let the hosts know in advance and they will do their best to accommodate them.

Location & local area

Where is it and how do you get there?

By road

From the North exit the M6 at Carlisle, take the A5959 to Cockermouth, Egremont and then Gosforth. From the South, Depart the M6 at Junction 36 along the A590/A595 South Cumbria to Broughton in Furness then through Ulpha and over Birker Moor.

By rail

The nearest large station is Oxenholme, from which you can also arrange car hire. If you would like to leave your car at home altogether, you can even come by train from Ravenglass to Boot on the 'Ratty', which is only 400m from the cottages - and the hosts will help you with your luggage!

By air

The nearest large airport is Manchester Airport, which is approximately two hours away by car. Carlisle Airport is closer and offers international as well as domestic flights.

About the owners


I renovated all the cottages when I first bought them, now 30 years ago, and have been providing luxury accommodation to all our guests ever since. Every year, we make new additions and improvements to each cottage and our friendly team of staff are always available to help!

Tips from the owners

Local things to do, places to eat and attractions not to be missed.

  • Take a trip down the valley on the Eskdale and Ravenglass Narrow Gauge Steam Railway.

  • Walk to Stanley Ghyll 60ft waterfall or to England's deepest lake, Wastwater.

  • Swim in the River Esk rock pools in summer.

  • Enjoy a beef and ale pie at the Boot Inn.

  • Relax with a book or play a game of football in the riverside paddock.

  • Visit Hardknott Roman Fort and take in the stunning views of the whole valley.

  • Visit England's oldest working watermill, Boot Mill, adjacent to the cottages.
