If you're looking to get away from it all in a peaceful, countryside setting then Cologin near Oban on the west coast of Scotland is just the place. The location is picture perfect - huddled in the surrounding hills surrounded by wild Scottish countryside and you couldn't be further away from the stresses of city living. A ‘haven in the hills' it is indeed.

Cologin is a family run site and has 14 lodges, 4 chalets, and 2 cottages on offer; from a 1 bedroom cottage to a 5 bedroom farmhouse and you can specify if you want pet free or pet friendly. Their Inner Hebridean Lodge is recommended for families. It has two large bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a large open plan lounge with a double fold-down sofa bed. There are different set up options available depending on how many are staying so ask when you book. All have modern, well presented kitchens with everything you need. The Outer Hebridean lodges have one bedroom and so can sleep 2 adults and a cot. Cots are available if required but bring your own linen.

Bed linen and towels are provided as part of the rental in all properties. Extra bed linen packs, which include towels, can also be hired for the sofa beds if required. There's a laundry on site with coin operated washers and driers should you need to refresh the tons of clothes you may have brought along.

There are disabled access lodges which are slightly bigger than the standard two bedroom lodge - if available these may be used for families with 3 kids as an additional z-bed can be put in the twin room.

If you are planning to have large gathering of friends/family then there's Cologin Farmhouse. It can sleep up to a maximum of 12 including children. It has five bedrooms - one ground floor room with a kingsize bed and en-suite shower room, one triple room with a double and single bed and washbasin, one family room with twin beds, bunk beds and day bed and en-suite and finally one standard double bedroom. It also has two family bathrooms. The lounge has an open fire and the dining room has double doors leading out to the patio and BBQ area. And of course a farmhouse kitchen for those big family breakfasts.  An additional four children can be accommodated though you will not all be able to eat at the table in one sitting and the lounge area will be very busy! If you're anything like us parents are round the kitchen table most of the time anyway!  Towels are included in your stay at the farmhouse.

Wi-fi is available in all properties at Cologin and is free for 2 hours from log in. If you need longer you simply have to log back in. Being a beautiful rural area, wifi can sometimes be slow, but adequate for checking emails and surfing the web if required.

Cologin has its own country pub and restaurant - The Barn - which is the heart of estate. Voted Scottish Pub of the Year NW region The Barn is a friendly and cosy establishment which also offers live music from local musicians who play regularly throughout the year. They use the best fresh local produce and vegetarians are particularly well catered for. Kids can choose from the children's menu or ½ portions from the daily blackboard specials. You can also get carry outs and take away meals to enjoy in your lodge if you don't fancy cooking and, if you order when booking, you can have a freshly prepared plated meals in your fridge ready to be reheated in your microwave on arrival so you don't have to cook if you've had a long tiring journey. Oban is 5 minutes away by car for supplies and has all the usual supermarkets, chemists, shops etc along with a full range of eating out places.

Things to Do

The estate has its own loch - Loch Inver - which is a gentle 1 mile walk away where you can fish for brown trout for free as a resident, either from the loch edge or by hiring the boat to go out onto the loch. (Buoyancy aids are available). They'll let you borrow some rods etc if you don't have your own. There's a small kids playpark on site and the area has superb walks and forest trails all around. With a myriad of things to do and places to visit in and around Oban, Cologin makes a great base. This is a true get away from it all location and with no ‘street lights' (torches are supplied for getting around after dark) the stars fill the sky on a clear night and you may even glimpse the northern lights if you are lucky.
