If you're looking to get away from it all in a peaceful, countryside setting then Cologin near Oban on the west coast of Scotland is just the place. The location is picture perfect - huddled in the surrounding hills surrounded by wild Scottish countryside and you couldn't be further away from the stresses of city living. A ‘haven in the hills' it is indeed.

Rooms

Cologin is a family run site and has 14 lodges, 4 chalets, and 2 cottages on offer; from a 1 bedroom cottage to a 5 bedroom farmhouse and you can specify if you want pet free or pet friendly. Their Inner Hebridean Lodge is recommended for families with two large bedrooms, one double one twin, and a large open plan lounge. If more beds are needed ask for a lodge with a double sofa bed in the lounge.

Bed linen and towels are provided as part of the rental in all properties. Extra bed linen packs, which include towels, can also be hired for the sofa beds if required. There's a laundry on site with coin operated washers and driers should you need to refresh the tons of clothes you may have brought along.

Eat

All of the properties have well equipped kitchens but the onsite restaurant carries a Taste our Best award from VisitScotland so you can be sure of good, tasty, local produce and provenance. Voted Scottish Pub of the Year NW region The Barn is the heart of the estate and a friendly and cosy establishment, offering live music from local musicians who play regularly throughout the year.

The best fresh local produce is used and vegetarians are particularly well catered for. Children can choose from their own menu or have ½ portions from the daily blackboard specials. You may order carry outs and take away meals to enjoy in your lodge if you don't fancy cooking and, if you order when booking, you can have a freshly prepared plated meals in your fridge ready to be reheated in your microwave on arrival so you don't have to cook after your journey.

Oban is 5 minutes away by car for supplies and has all the usual supermarkets, chemists, shops etc along with a full range of eating out places.

Activities

Cologin is best for a chilled break away from technology (don’t worry you can still check your emails) . Get out and about walking and exploring as it’s a great base to get Wild About Argyll. As owner Linda says "We’ve raised three children at Cologin and our girls have all ridden in our hills, fished in our Loch and climbed trees in our forests. They’ve enjoyed the freedom that living in the country affords and we’d like all kids to have that same experience to explore and learn from the natural environment."

Further afield Oban offers many attractions and, as you would expect on the west coast, the scenery is stunning everywhere and there are many activities on land and at sea.

Where is it and how do you get there?

By Road

A couple of hours drive from Glasgow (slightly further from Edinburgh). The drive itself is spectacular alongside Loch Lomond. Take the A85/A82 from Glasgow and the A816 from Oban. Turn into Lerags via a single track road and Cologin is less than a mile from the main road.

By Rail

Oban train station is nearby (a sleeper connection to London is available).

We are keen sailors, and while the west coast is our playground, Scotland is our passion. Linda is a yellow badge walking guide and an active member of the business community. Jim loves to share his enthusiasm for the sea and his country with visitors. Together we live at Cologin - it’s our home and our livelihood and it’s important that our guests leave as friends.

Walk up to McCaig’s Tower from which you will enjoy the glorious views of Oban bay.
Take a boat from Oban to explore the local seal colonies, spot dolphins, wales and basking sharks.
Atlantis Leisure is a local swimming pool, playpark, climbing wall and sports hall and perfect for wet days.
Go Bananas is great for wet weather days with a cafe and soft play centre.
Explore Dunollie Castle - ancient seat of Clan MacDougall.
