About Dome Garden
The Dome Garden is brilliant - a group of luxurious eco lodges set in the heart of Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean, the stylish, insulated, self-contained domes offer families everything they need for a luxury camping holiday, whilst getting ‘back to nature’. The Domes are set on solid decks and heated with woodburning stoves and provide accommodation for up to six people. Each has a small forest kitchen with an organic fridge and a dedicated en-suite with a private flushing toilet - camping luxury!
The Away with the Kids review
The Dome Garden offers a real luxury camping experience. The ten stylish, insulated domes have everything you need, and more, for a fantastic break in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Sleeping comfortably a family of four, five or six (at a pinch) you'll find luxurious linen, an even more luxurious en-suite (I know, perfect!), a woodburner to keep you cosy - and to cook on - and breakfasts prepared and an evening meal option (pizza!) twice a week.
Depending on your requirements there are three types of dome: Dome Simple - 20ft of glamping option with an en-suite; Dome-itory - THE place for the kids to sleep en-masse - no question!; and Double Dome that has a spare bedroom?! For the kids or your camping paraphernalia - which ever is more important!
All are warm and cosy due to insulated covers and wood-burners so fear not for woodland chills - though I ALWAYS have to have my bed socks - and a woolly hat - many times lots in between but not always depending on temp! ALL have en-suite shower or bath supplied by the stoves that heat up your water which is then stored on the roof in a butt. You have your own flushing loo -decadent in the middle of the night! The Domes have solid floors, beds with lovely linen supplied and a kitchen area so no sitting outside with the Trangia trying not to knock over your precious supply of meths!
It's not just for adults!
Babies and children are in enormous part at the Dome Garden and much of it is built around the things they need - be they tiny babies or very grown up 10 year olds.
“Our own children have spent the last few years watching the domes take shape and have definitely influenced the way we’ve done things. We took the view that if it didn't work for our 6 to 9 years olds it wasn’t going to work for yours.” says Helen – co-owner of the DG and mother of three, once-small, children.
For young families the dome garden is perfect. A secure enclosed compound with a village atmosphere and lots of simple but effective things to entertain the kids all within easy site of your dome. It's mostly basic stuff, rope swings hanging from the trees, a short zip wire and even a secret tree house as well as a lot of running around in between. It’s a simple but effective remedy to help unplug your children from the virtual world so many inhabit. There is also a supply of adaptors, chargers, extra beds, cots, sterilisers, baby seats and "baby thingeys" that you must ask Jonny about!
Though chargers are available as previously mentioned this really is down time - signals are out and you will be forced to leave the technology at home - or maybe locked in the car. That means you get to have conversations and play board games, and do simple things like find out what each other has been doing over the past month or so over a glass of something! That glass of something may be partaken at the fabulous idea that is The Edge Bar - The Dome Garden's "residents-only saloon".
And should you rather eat something other than noodles, sausages or beans (I have never got into that one pot thing!) then the pizza cooking in the oven on site provides a meal without effort - just sit back, smell the aromas and keep sipping that drink whilst your meal gets cooked for you.
Just to emphasise the point - Domes are deceptively large - which is why we love them. The Dome Garden's Dome-itory though has to be done. The 20ft dome has arial hammocks that provide dangling beds from the rafters - the PERFECT option to pop all the kids in one space for a night of novelty sleep-over fun - no-one will believe them in school! Meanwhile you can sneak back to your cosy bed and en-suite and listen to the giggles - lights out at 12:30!
There's a shop selling essentials on site - there are heaps of things to do within the forest including llama treks, canoeing and of course walking! And there's a fab place to get back to when the activities are over. Enjoy!
