Just outside a quaint country village, you'll find this ancient barn sitting on a working farm and now lovingly rejuvenated by Joanna. The accommodation offers contemporary, open-plan family living, where you can happily chill out on sofas enjoying the home cinema set-up, read a book in front of the log-burner or sip on a decent coffee or glass of something, putting the world to rights across the dining table - this is a relaxed, stylish escape for you to rock up to and really relax.

About this place

Best bits

  • The fabulous kids play area with wooden teepee to hide in, homemade superhero cloaks and a wooden toy shop and kitchen amongst other wooden toys.
  • The cosiness - a log burner in the lounge area, along with beaten up old leather sofas provides the perfect space for toasty family wintery nights.
  • The professional coffee machine has remained from the days of being a cafe; coffee lovers will be delighted at the chance to play barista and make the perfect coffee with locally roasted beans provided.

Top tips

  • Go and check out the new polar bear at Jimmy’s farm, only twenty minutes down the road.
  • Take your slippers, the barn has lovely new radiators and a log burner but does still have a cold, concrete floor.
  • You will need a car, unfortunately public transport isn’t great.

As a person who hates waste and loves to upcycle, converting this barn using what was on site was the dream.  With my basic carpentry skills I created a rustic space which was ran as a popular kids cafe until COVID-19.  After this I converted it to a holiday let aimed at families with young children.  It was really important to me to create a space that would be relaxing for parents whilst their children could have fun with lots of different toys, outdoor natural play and space to run around.

Owner recommendations

  • Hunt for sharks teeth along the coast line at Walton-on-the-naze.  An Essex Wildlife Trust reserve with a beautiful stretch of beach backed by red sandstone cliffs.  A unique landscape of outstanding geological and biological importance.  It is also an important site for migrating birds.  This is a lovely place for a walk but also a great place to find fossilised sharks teeth.

  • The Naze Nature Discovery Centre has a cafe and museum and the Historic Naze tower that houses an art gallery and tea room.

  • Colchester castle museum is set in the historic roman town of Colchester, this is Norman castle open to the public. The keep of the castle is mostly intact and is the largest example of its kind anywhere in Europe, due to its being built on the foundations of a Roman temple.

  • The National Trust property Flatford Mill was made famous by John Constable’s paintings.  There are lovely walks along the river up to the lovely village of Dedham, tearooms, boating, crafty shops.

  • Further round the coast there is Titchmarsh marina where you can hop on a boat and seek out wildlife.
