About Lagnakeil Highland Lodges
A brilliant location for a self-catering holiday in Scotland, Lagnakeil offers uninterrupted views of mountains, lochs and islands, close to sea loch "Feochan" on the Scottish west coast. The comfortable lodges sit in the hillside in Lerags Glen in the Highlands just a ten minue drive from Oban, the gateway to the islands.
Fine views and fine weather with kids gambolling around in the Scottish Highlands is a difficult scenario to beat. However, we all know that holidaying with kids and getting away from it all can be a challenge. We’ve been an hour from civilisation - which has many plus points - but boy do you need to be ultra-organised and make sure you have everything you need with you. Otherwise there’s the ‘journey’ to find that essential you forgot. Not so with the Lagnakeil Highland lodges. The lodges are situated 10 minutes away from the gateway to the islands, Oban which has all the amenities you will need and particaulrly handy for forgetful parents.
Once out of town and down the short single track road to the lodges you will quickly forget you are so close to an urban centre. Lagnakeil’s lodges sit at the head of the quiet glen commanding beautiful views - it’s then you will likely relax.
There are four lodge types to choose from. Conifer sleeps 6 with three bedrooms, Ash sleeps 4 with 2 bedrooms. Beech and Poplar sleeps 3 and 2 respectively and are more suited to families with a baby/toddler. We visited Ash Lodge in February - it was compact, cosy, easily heated and had room enough for the four of us to enjoy our time there comfortably. The open plan layout meant we were ‘together’, with the living area divided into a lounge space and dining area with a decent sized dining table - the kitchen was well equipped for all of our self-catering needs. Cots and highchairs are supplied as required. Outside each lodge has a private patio area with picnic bench to enjoy the views and fresh air.
A games room and laundry are available for those on longer stays or when the weather is not too good. A play area for the kids is in full view of the lodges so it’s easy to keep an eye on them, although the equipment is limited, which may be an issue during busier holiday periods. However, given the space to explore, rambles through the wood and around the glen are obvious and attractive distractions.
Things to Do
The guide book suggested a number different spots in the local area to visit. In particular it recommends a hike to the local country pub called The Barn. A pleasant walk of about a mile, it is a great introduction for very young kids to hiking and following the country code. And there’s refreshment at the end of it.
The short distance to main roads makes the lodges a great base for day trips around the area. A trip to Oban takes minutes and there there are many amenities and facilities including a good number of restaurants and cafes to choose from. The local leisure centre has a swimming pool and just beside the leisure centre is an excellent play park.
You are so close to the ferry point that a trip to one of the islands is a day out must. One place of particular interest for the kids would be a trip by ferry to Tobermory on Mull, the location used to film the children's series Ballamory. Alternatively a ferry day out will blow away the cobwebs and give you chance to enjoy more gorgeous views of this stunning area.
